Is Taylor Swift a philosopher? -/- What can her songs tell us about ethics and society? -/- What is the nature of friendship? -/- Should you forgive someone for breaking your heart? -/- Taylor Swift is a “Mastermind” when it comes to relationships, songwriting, and performing sold-out stadium tours. But did you know that Taylor is also a philosophical mastermind? -/- Taylor Swift and Philosophy is the first book to explore the philosophical topics that arise from Taylor (...)

    Population Control: Financial Incentives, Freedom, and Question of Coercion.Alicia M. R. Donner - 2010 - Stance 3 (1):17-24.
The planet’s swiftly growing population coupled with the lack of food security and the degradation of natural resources has caused many demographers to worry about the ramifications of unchecked population growth while many philosophers worry about the ethical issues surrounding the methods of population control. Therefore, I intend to argue a system of encouraging a decrease in personal fertility rate via financial incentives offers a solution that is both viable and not morally reprehensible.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an answer to the following question: should we blame ourselves more than we blame others, like some of Taylor’s song such as High Infidelity, Would’ve, Could’ve Should’ve, Afterglow or Anti-Hero seem to suggest? In order to settle this question, I discuss an asymmetry in our intuitions about the ethics of self-blame and other-blame. The asymmetry is this: for a given wrongdoing, let us say arriving late to a concert, it often seems morally (...)

  8. What is said and psychological reality; Grice's project and relevance theorists' criticisms.Jennifer M. Saul - 2002 - Linguistics and Philosophy 25 (3):347-372.
One of the most important aspects of Grice’s theory of conversation is the drawing of a borderline between what is said and what is implic- ated. Grice’s views concerning this borderline have been strongly and influentially criticised by relevance theorists. In particular, it has become increasingly widely accepted that Grice’s notion of what is said is too lim- ited, and that pragmatics has a far larger role to play in determining what is said than Grice would have allowed. The Man on the Dump versus the United Dames of America; Or, What Does Frank Lentricchia Want?Sandra M. Gilbert & Susan Gubar - 1988 - Critical Inquiry 14 (2):386-406.
That the pattern into which Lentricchia seeks to assimilate Stevens is politically charged becomes clearest when we turn to the following oddly incomprehensible statement: “In the literary culture that Stevens would create, the ‘phallic’ would not have been the curse word of some recent feminist criticism but the name of a limited, because male, respect for literature” . At the point where he makes this assertion, Lentricchia has been persuasively demonstrating that Stevens was “encouraged … to fantasize the potential social (...)

    Structures of care in the Iliad.M. Lynn-George - 1996 - Classical Quarterly 46 (01):1-.
When Andromache emerges from the inner chamber in Book 22, ascends the walls of Troy and looks out over the plain, she beholds a spectacle of ruthless brutality. She who has not been aware of the final combat, nor of the slaying of her husband, is suddenly confronted by the receding trail of utter defeat. Swift horses drag her husband's corpse into the distance, the cherished head disfigured as it is dragged, raking the dust of what was once their (...)

Foley, Alex Garcia-Gonzalez, Shannon Robb & Douglas Ross - 2022 - Clinical Ethics 17 (2):198-204.
Objective To develop an ethically, legally, and clinically appropriate ventilator allocation policy for AdventHealth Tampa and AdventHealth Carrollwood in Tampa, Florida, which could be enacted swiftly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods During Spring 2020, a subcommittee of the Medical Ethics Committee established consensus on the fundamental principles of the policy, then built on existing ethical, legal, and clinical guidance. Results The plan was finalized in May 2020. The plan triages patients based on exclusion criteria (imminent mortality), prognosis and expected benefit (...)

Paternalistic Discrimination.Søren Flinch Midtgaard & Viki Møller Lyngby Pedersen - forthcoming - Law and Philosophy.
Some policies are paternalistic and discriminatory at the same time (e.g., certain benevolent sexist policies). Such policies constitute an interesting, yet somewhat overlooked, category. We scrutinize what paternalistic discrimination is and account for its wrongness. First, we argue that paternalistic discrimination is pro tanto wrong because it is disrespectful. The disrespect consists in the selective negligence or denial of some people’s moral power over their own good. This applies even if the policies and actions in question benefit those interfered with. (...)

Promoting Virtue or Punishing Fraud: Mapping Contrasts in the Language of ‘Scientific Integrity’.S. P. J. M. Horbach & W. Halffman - 2017 - Science and Engineering Ethics 23 (6):1461-1485.
Even though integrity is widely considered to be an essential aspect of research, there is an ongoing debate on what actually constitutes research integrity. The understanding of integrity ranges from the minimal, only considering falsification, fabrication and plagiarism, to the maximum, blending into science ethics. Underneath these obvious contrasts, there are more subtle differences that are not as immediately evident. The debate about integrity is usually presented as a single, universal discussion, with shared concerns for researchers, policymakers and ‘the public’. (...)

    The neural correlates of religious and nonreligious belief.S. Harris, J. T. Kaplan, A. Curiel, S. Y. Bookheimer, M. Iacoboni & M. S. Cohen - unknown
Background: While religious faith remains one of the most significant features of human life, little is known about its relationship to ordinary belief at the level of the brain. Nor is it known whether religious believers and nonbelievers differ in how they evaluate statements of fact. Our lab previously has used functional neuroimaging to study belief as a general mode of cognition, and others have looked specifically at religious belief. However, no research has compared these two states of mind directly. (...)

    Some Fragments of Galen's on Dispositions (Περί θν) in Arabic.S. M. Stern - 1956 - Classical Quarterly 6 (1-2):91-.
The Greek original of Galen's is lost, nor has a copy of the complete translation into Arabic, made by Hunayn b. Ishāq in the first half of the ninth century, come down to us, though some passages of it are quoted by various Arab authors. A summary of the translation, however, was discovered by P. Kraus in a miscellaneous manuscript in Cairo and published by him in the Bulletin of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Egypt, vol. v/i.

    Why we should have seen that coming.M. J. Wolf, K. Miller & F. S. Grodzinsky - 2017 - Acm Sigcas Computers and Society 47 (3):54-64.
In this paper we examine the case of Tay, the Microsoft AI chatbot that was launched in March, 2016. After less than 24 hours, Microsoft shut down the experiment because the chatbot was generating tweets that were judged to be inappropriate since they included racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic language. We contend that the case of Tay illustrates a problem with the very nature of learning software that interacts directly with the public, and the developer's role and responsibility associated with it. Treatment-resistant schizophrenia: Evidence-based strategies.S. Englisch & M. Zink - 2012 - Mens Sana Monographs 10 (1):20.
Treatment-resistant symptoms complicate the clinical course of schizophrenia, and a large proportion of patients do not reach functional recovery. In consequence, polypharmacy is frequently used in treatment-refractory cases, addressing psychotic positive, negative and cognitive symptoms, treatment-emergent side effects caused by antipsychotics and comorbid depressive or obsessive-compulsive symptoms. To a large extent, such strategies are not covered by pharmacological guidelines which strongly suggest antipsychotic monotherapy. Add-on strategies comprise combinations of several antipsychotic agents and augmentations with mood stabilizers; moreover, antidepressants and experimental (...)

    Kant After Marx.S. M. Love - 2017 - Kantian Review 22 (4):579-598.
While there are many points of opposition between the political philosophies of Marx and Kant, the two can greatly benefit from one another in various ways. Bringing the ideas of Marx and Kant together offers a promising way forward for each view. Most significantly, a powerful critique of capitalism can be developed from their combined thought: Kant’s political philosophy offers a robust idea of freedom to ground this critique, while Marx provides the nuanced understanding of social and political power structures (...)
